Are Mobile Phones Becoming The New Desktop Computer?

As mobile phones become more advanced and user-friendly, mobile Internet usage is rapidly growing. With 4.55 Billion mobile phone users and 1.08 Billion smartphone users worldwide, mobile phone Internet usage is rising and expected to overtake desktop Internet usage.

Largely due to developing countries having access to cheap mobile phones and data plans that are much less expensive than having to buy desktop computer; As well, places with poor infrastructure will experience slower and more expensive ‘at home Internet connections’, which makes smartphones a more viable option.

There are over 2.23 billion people worldwide or 48.9% of mobile users that will go online using their phone, at least once a month. It is estimated that between the years of 2013–2017, mobile phone penetration will increase from 61.1% to 69.4%. This is a ripe opportunity for Augmented Reality to take a strong-hold with mobile users.

With over 91% of people worldwide owning phones and the average person looks at their phone 150 times a day, there is a huge opportunity for retailers. This is why 78% of retailers plan to invest in smartphones for 2014. Clearly showing mobile marketing is the way of the future!

With capabilities such as surfing the web, playing games, connecting to social media, watching videos, taking photos and of course making phone calls/sending texts, there is no wonder why mobile phone Internet usage is to beginning to exceed desktop Internet use.
